Located in Asprela, Porto, the landscape design of Residência de Estudantes aims to create outdoor spaces that extend campus life for students and visitors. Asprela, a bustling university district in Porto, is characterized by its vibrant academic atmosphere and rapid urban development.
The design intends to harmonize with this dynamic environment while addressing the need for sustainable and functional outdoor spaces
The project integrates indoor and outdoor areas that create spaces for waiting, staying, resting, interacting, studying and playing, thereby extending campus life beyond the building’s walls accommodating the daily activities of students and visitors.
The design blurs the distinction between indoor and outdoor areas by connecting the backyard to the front garden, fostering a sense of unity and openness.
In our design process, we prioritized incorporating concepts like “wait,” “play,” “grow,” “study,” and “chill.” This led us to create outdoor spaces that offer quality environments for these everyday activities of students and visitors.
As part of the design’s strategy, the project incorporates specific elements that encourage people to gather, linger, and enjoy the surroundings
The design balances various functions, with approximately 25% dedicated to community farming, 25% to active social spaces, and 50% to forested areas. Native species have been specifically chosen for their low maintenance and water requirements to ensure functionality and comfort throughout all four seasons.
