In the city of Tirana, Albania, we worked closely with the awarded and international architecture firm CHAP, intending to transform an old dwelling into a museum dedicated to the Jewish community.
Intending to seamlessly blend landscaping into the building, create hybrid spaces, and integrate courtyards as essential components of the project, we designed three main spaces across the site, aiming to offer multiple stories linked in one continuous string. At the same time, there is a clear contrast between heritage and contemporary elements, adding depth and meaning to the space.
A semi-public garden at the entrance as the welcoming character of Albanian people. This garden has a solemn character, highlighting the original fortification wall and a tranquil space to contemplate the site.
Beyond the first pavilion and before the old house, a multi-functional courtyard is designed for larger exhibitions and museum events with the special goal of presenting and honoring to the different groups of people the old house as a masterful monument of times passed.
Lastly, at the end of the site, on a much more intimate scale, a reflection area with small exhibitions as a meditative ending to the visit.
With functionality and sustainability in mind, the design features clear and simple pathways, versatile spaces, and permeable flooring with water collection systems, creating a landscape that will respectfully and amiably welcome visitors to the Besa Museum for many years to come.
